FAQ

A Neck Lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess fat and tightening of the platysma muscle.  The skin on your neck and surrounding tissue are typically where the first signs of aging take place.  As we get older, neck skin stretches, causing sagging, creases, vertical bands, and wrinkles.  Even as your face maintains its youthful appearance, an aging neck can make you look older.  By treating the neck, we are able to restore firmness, leaving the treatment area smooth and defined.

During your initial consultation with your Arike specialist, you will be able to discuss your concerns, goals, possible risks, and benefits of the procedure.  At this time, we will be able to determine your candidacy and provide you with the next steps toward your journey at Arike.
With any skin lifting procedure, there are multiple steps that go into creating the perfect outcome.  To achieve these results, liposuction will be performed to remove any excess fat from the area. This procedure is performed in our state-of-the-art ambulatory treatment room, which typically takes 90 minutes or so to complete. Surgical times vary depending on patient size, BMI, location, and amount of treatment areas scheduled if other surgical procedures are included.

Your surgeon and medical team will ensure you are comfortably sedated and monitor your health throughout the procedure.  Small incisions, about half an inch to an inch long, will be created as access points to insert the cannula for precise fat removal. In some cases where skin laxity is significant, additional incisions may be required behind or around the ears, similar to a lower facelift. Once your surgeon has reached the limit of suctioning fat, including stubborn fat under the platysma muscle, this is where the muscle will be tightened and excess skin removed.  Once the doctor has trimmed away the excess tissue, it will be slightly stretched and closed to fit the new contours of the neck.  The incisions will be dressed to absorb leaking fluids from the sites. A compression garment will be provided to aid in skin retraction, reducing swelling and bruising while enhancing surgical outcomes.

For patients considering a Neck Lift, they should have saggy neck skin, fatty deposits, and vertical neck bands.  Those who notice age-related sagging are great candidates.  Excess fat and skin laxity are surgically supported, creating an improved neckline, firm jawline, and an overall youthful appearance.

Healing time varies by individual, treatment area, and size.  Depending on your daily routine, most candidates can return to their normal activities, within reason, as soon as one week, although healing can persist for a few months or longer.  Bruising is expected and will fade in a matter of days or a few weeks.  Swelling may take longer, persisting from several weeks to several months.  Most patients describe a ‘tightness’ in the area rather than sharp pain.  Compression garments are encouraged to be used daily, anywhere between 2 to 6 weeks, to reduce these side effects.  The recovery process is a journey; patience is highly recommended, as your body will have fluctuations in healing. Remember to follow home care instructions and keep up with any post-operative appointments to ensure results.

Yes! The risks of a Neck Lift are generally low, possible side effects such as bruising, swelling, infection and pain can be reduced with proper adherence to post-operative care.  Ambulating and sitting in an upright position regularly after your procedure will decrease the chances of blood clotting and increase the recovery process.  Any rigorous motions can cause a reopening of your incision, so light activities are encouraged until you are medically cleared, and the incision has healed.  Your medical team at Arike will provide detailed instructions for at-home care and pain management. Incisions will be dressed to absorb leaking fluids from the sites. Because the eyelids have great healing ability, any scarring is hidden once healed.
